HEALTH-RELATED RESOURCES

Health Literacy. The Oklahoma State Department of Health offers a 6-week course addressing core issues (determinants) that affect the health outcomes of Oklahomans. The program is free and empowers participants to take charge of health and lifestyle behaviors that may lead to poor health outcomes. This is excellent training for individuals who have chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, or other health related problem, or for pastors, friends, or family members of individuals who suffer with health concerns. Mental Health First Aid. Basic mental health first aid information is available at (http://www.mhfa.com.au/) along with information about the Mental Health First Aid Instructor Training being offered by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. The course teaches faith-based and community leaders about symptoms, causes and evidenced-based treatments for the common mental health problems of depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and substance use disorder. It also addresses possible crisis situations arising from these mental health problems and steps to help. Crisis situations include suicidal feelings, panic attacks, traumatic events, acute psychosis with possible threat of violence, and drug overdose. The SoonerStart Early Intervention Program uses an individualized, comprehensive and coordinated system of services and supports to enhance the abilities of Oklahoma infants and toddlers with disabilities and developmental delays. SoonerStart also helps strengthen the capacity of families to support these children’s development.
